26 January Republic Day

Chandrayaan-3: India’s historic lunar mission

India has achieved a remarkable feat in space exploration with the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 mission’s Vikram lander on the Moon on August 23, 2023. The lander, which carried the Pragyan rover, touched down near the lunar south pole, making India the fourth country to soft-land on the Moon after the United States, Russia and China.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission is the third in a series of lunar missions by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which began with Chandrayaan-1 in 2008. Chandrayaan-1 was the first Indian mission to orbit the Moon and discover traces of water on its surface. Chandrayaan-2, launched in 2019, attempted to land near the south pole but lost contact with the lander before touchdown.

Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-up mission that reused the orbiter of Chandrayaan-2 and added a new lander and rover. The mission aims to study the lunar terrain, mineralogy, surface chemistry and signatures of water ice. The Pragyan rover, which has six wheels and can travel up to 500 meters, is equipped with cameras, spectrometers and a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy instrument to analyze the lunar soil.

ISRO Chairman S Somanath said that Chandrayaan-3 is not just for India, but for the whole world. He added that the mission will contribute to the scientific understanding of the Moon and pave the way for future exploration. He also praised the low-cost and high-efficiency approach of ISRO, which spent only $91 million on Chandrayaan-3, compared to $1.5 billion spent by NASA on its Artemis program.

The success of Chandrayaan-3 has been widely celebrated in India and abroad, as a testament to India’s growing prowess in space technology and innovation. The mission has also boosted the confidence of ISRO, which plans to launch more ambitious missions in the coming years, such as Gaganyaan (human spaceflight), Aditya-L1 (solar observatory) and Shukrayaan-1 (Venus orbiter).
